Callejón de la Loma, opposite Ocean Dream Plaza, Cabarete
Italian and Mediterranean, owned since 2011 by an Italian chef and sommelier. Fresh local fish, pasta, bread and desserts all made in the house, US Angus, and a long Italian and international list. A spare dining room built around a pool. Dinner only. The best table in Cabarete.
C. Paseo del Sol 5, Cabarete 57000
Two open-air rooms at an eco-boutique house three miles from the centre. Karaya serves breakfast and lunch on the lighter side, ceviche and salads. Natura runs dinner under an Argentine chef, tropical fusion with Italian and raw influences. Live music on Saturday evenings.
La Boca, Islabón, near Cabarete
A riverside seafood room at Islabón, reached by an unpaved road and then a short boat crossing over the river. Shrimp, fish and lambí cooked over a wood stove with plantains, rice and beans. It is an expedition rather than a walk-in, and the better for it. We arrange the transport.
Cabarete
Breakfast, brunch and lunch on a Mediterranean and French leaning menu, built around Direct Trade shade-grown coffee roasted locally. Proceeds support the Mariposa DR Foundation, which educates local girls.
Kite Beach, Cabarete
The kiteboarding beaches, three to five minutes east of the town, lined with schools, gear shops and beach bars. Flat water and reef break by turns, depending on the wind direction. Bozo sits between the town and Kite Beach with a wider bay for launching. The wind is strongest from April to September and peaks between June and August, with a second season from December to April.
Playa Encuentro, near Cabarete
The country's principal surf beach, a reef break ten minutes west of the town, with several breaks suited to different levels and schools along the access road. Surfable year-round, with the largest swells between November and March and gentler conditions through the summer.
Near Río San Juan
A large cliff-backed crescent near Río San Juan, forty-five minutes to an hour east of Cabarete. Swimming, bodysurfing, surf, and snorkelling near the reef. Largely undeveloped next to Cabarete and Sosúa.

Massages, facials, wraps and scrubs, with daily yoga and Pilates in a dedicated studio. Day passes covering the spa with the pool and beach are available to those not staying.
Casa Colonial, Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata
Twelve thousand square feet on the ocean at Playa Dorada, thirty to forty minutes from Cabarete, designed by the Dominican architect Sarah García on Feng Shui principles. Ten treatment rooms including two for couples with jacuzzis and ocean-view terraces, and three outdoor gazebos set over a pond. Worth the drive as a half-day.
Playa Encuentro, Cabarete
A family-run school on the sand at Playa Encuentro, approved by the Ministry of Tourism. Ninety-minute beginner lessons on soft boards, rental, and multi-day progression for those staying longer.
Millennium Resort & Spa, Cabarete Bay
Trading since 2003, founded by the professional kiteboarder Laurel Eastman, now based inside the Millennium Resort on Cabarete Bay. Private and group kiteboarding and wing-foil instruction, gear, lockers and retail. IKO certified.
Imbert, Puerto Plata
A protected natural monument near Imbert, forty-five minutes to an hour inland, where a canyon of waterfalls and pools is climbed on foot and descended by jumping and sliding. Co-managed with the local guides' association, and a certified guide, helmet and life jacket are required. It is heavily used as a cruise shore excursion, so it is worth going privately and early rather than not at all.
